Ocean House is located on a promontory of exposed lava, drawing inspiration from traditional Balinese palaces and temples in both its siting and form. The design responds to the tropical environment through methods intended to integrate the house with its natural surroundings and the distinctive landscape defined by lava flows. The building is anchored to the site by a substantial lava base, establishing a connection between the architecture and the geological setting. Roof planes are arranged to appear as if floating above the structure, creating broad overhangs that provide shade to the interiors. Sliding window walls facilitate a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces and employ natural breezes for passive cooling. A significant design element is a river of hardened lava traversing the property, symbolically linking the house to the mountains and sea, which are traditionally regarded as sources of energy in Pacific cultures. Time-honored building practices and tropical design principles are incorporated throughout, shaping the residence’s experience and its relationship to the broader landscape.
