Long residence

Cutler Anderson Architects — Orca Island, WA, 2003

Set in a second growth forest on the north side of a salt water channel, this residence is designed to accommodate a couple and their guest. While opening to the views of the water, the simple shed roof form closes the building off from the easement road above. The wooden structure of the building tries to exhibit the character and variety of the materials. The cedar log tripods are designed to withstand lateral loads while the log beams and 2 X 12 rafters resist gravity. The whole of the wooden support is enclosed in a glass and cedar shingle shell that protects it, and in doing so, honors it.
