Mountain Retreat

Clinkston Brunner Architects — near Roslyn, WA

The weekend and vacation retreat in the Cascade Mountains is a distilled interpretation of local "lodge" architecture. A "transitional" theme is applied to the exterior and interior design, resulting in a character that falls between traditional and contemporary. Details are straightforward and of structural purpose. The buildings are arranged within tight site constraints to provide a semi-public arrival zone that is distinct from the private courtyard. The bridge forms a gateway between the two areas. Timber columns and steel beams do the heavy lifting at the bridge and in the Greatroom. This structural expression provides a clear and organizing framework for the Greatroom activities. One of the family's daughters is confined to a wheelchair. An elevator and upper level bridge provide access from the main house to the studio. Ample maneuvering room is designed into the floor plan, including a roll-in shower. The accessible elements are carefully integrated to flow easily within the interior architecture.
