Sea Cliff Sculptural

Butler Armsden reimagined this Seacliff house designed with a complex triangular geometry by noted San Francisco architect Timothy Pflueger. The house’s original closed and odd-shaped rooms were opened up to create a free-flowing space extending to expansive ocean views. A new, sculptural stair creates a visual center that is softly washed by the light entering through steel windows, and is framed by a series of arches on the main floor. A vocabulary of stone, plaster, wood and metal creates a spare aesthetic with a touch of the Mediterranean, which fits well with the seaside setting. As with any historic home in San Francisco, the exterior could be modified only in a subtle and sensitive manner, but behind the façade, the interior transformation is dramatic and complete.
