Shugart Bates is committed to a comprehensive design approach that combines large scale thinking with the artfulness of a small design studio. We have projects on the boards that range from large mixed-use projects to intimate interiors. Our design solutions are informed by the attention to craft required for smaller projects combined with the disciplined rigor demanded by large scale work. By designing at opposite ends of the scale we engage disciplines as varied as urban planning and interior design to enable the creation of inspiring places.
We focus on the interaction between people and their surroundings in order to create spaces of enduring beauty and relevance. We believe in the power of good design to transform and elevate the quality of our daily life. Our projects are successful because they are driven by great ideas and delivered with technical expertise. We strive to create design solutions that are relevant, durable and age with grace. We are committed to making positive long term contributions to the built environment and to help improve the quality of our increasingly dense cities.
William Charles Shugart, AIA, principal, earned both an undergraduate and Master of Architecture degree from Columbia University, the latter in 1985. For 16 years, previous to the formation of Shugart Bates, he was the founding principal of Tecnikos, an award-winning architectural/interior firm known for its innovative design approach to all building types including single family homes, multifamily housing, mixed-use building complexes and sports facilities. His stretch-the-envelope approach to design and extensive experience in all construction practices has resulted in consistently successful projects of all types and scale, and have won him the respect of his colleagues and many loyal clients. He has expertise in building feasibility studies and in-depth knowledge of zoning codes and issues in the City of Seattle. His private residential work has won awards from the American Institute of Architects and been featured in various publications from Seattle to Japan. Projects have been featured in “Seattle Metropolitan”, “Seattle Homes & Lifestyles”, “Northwest Home + Garden”, “Pacific Magazine”, and “Two x Four”. He is a member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
