BAAN is a small full-service residential building design practice. We are devoted to our clients and dedicated to our projects from conception to completion-starting with schematic design, working through construction drawings and ending in construction administration. Every project brings a unique set of circumstances, including specific programmatic goals, site considerations, methods of construction, type of materials, and local code requirements. All of these must be carefully balanced within the context of the project budget and schedule. We approach every project with an open-mind and we embrace the challenge of considering all of these issues throughout the design process while never losing site of the human element.
The design for the SAGA School in Seattle was based on a series of modular structures that could easily be constructed from natural wood in an existing space. The pieces, while creating specific areas for learning activities, play and quiet/study time, also allow for flexibility within the kindergarten/preschool space. The individual volumes are designed to the scale of a child, providing both vertical and horizontal smaller private spaces. The pieces were constructed on site primarily by parents of students enrolled in the school and other volunteers
