Charles L. Cunniffe came to Aspen in 1979 when he was enlisted by Thomas Wells, Architect, to be the Project Architect for the Master Planning, design and approvals for the renovation and addition to the historic Hotel Jerome. Followed by a year with Robin Molney (who studied with Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesen West), Charles subsequently established the firm of CCA in order to pursue his design philosophy within the studio environment of a progressive architectural and planning firm. As principal, he has repeatedly emphasized high quality design and sound client relations as the firm’s top priorities.
Charles’ educational background includes Bachelor Degrees in Architecture, Fine Arts and Sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design, followed by studies at Harvard Graduate School of Design, MIT, and Brown University. He received several scholarships during his academic career and has taken post-graduate courses in solar and alternative energy applications, real estate and law.
Prior to moving to Aspen in 1979, Charles worked with architectural firms in Rhode Island and Massachusetts and was involved in public, commercial and resort related projects. In Aspen his firm has successfully designed for both the public and private sectors across the country. These projects have included residential, resort, office, commercial, hotel, religious and public works facilities. Charles Cunniffe Architects has received many AIA awards for design excellence and has been recognized through numerous award programs and a multitude of professional publications.
Charles is registered in Colorado, Florida, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New York, is certified with NCARB, and is a member of the American Institute of Architects. In addition, he serves on AIA committees on design, urban planning and historic preservation and the AIA International Committee. Charles is actively involved in community affairs acting as Founding Board Member and Chairman of Governance of Jazz Aspen/Snowmass, Former Vice-Chairman of Aspen Historic Trust, Trustee of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and long time Trustee of the Aspen Art Museum. He is a Founding Board Member of Telluride’s Sheridan Arts Foundation and is a member of the Urban Land Institute, CLUB 20 of Western Colorado and Aspen Glen/Carbondale Rotary. Charles is a member of the Rocky Mountain Institute’s National Solutions Council and the Aspen Institute’s Society of Fellows. He is also a member of the National Advisory Board of the Childhelp River Bridge Children’s Advocacy Center and is a member of the Colorado Mountain College Foundation Board. Charles was appointed to the US/UK Fulbright Commission in 1999.
World travels inform Charles’ work with an insatiable curiosity of history, culture and rich artistic applications in architecture of all genres. Charles pilots his own plane, is an avid skier, enjoys sailing, playing drums and playing golf.
